Lecture 1: What is an emotion?
Kassin, Fein & Markus (11th ed.) Ch. 3 (p. 62–64, 89–91), Ch. 4 (p. 110–113) · Meston & Frohlich · Dutton & Aron (1974)
IN SHORTEmotions are goal-relevant reactions with three faces: behaviour, feeling and body. Whether arousal becomes fear, anger or attraction depends on the label your mind gives it, and that label can be wrong.

1.1What is an emotion?

Emotions are experiences that occur when we regard our situation as relevant to our active personal goals. It is a mental state caused by stimuli, characterised by three kinds of change:

  • Our behaviour, how we act.
  • Our subjective experience, how we feel.
  • Our physiology, how the systems of the body function.

The most prominent behaviours are facial expressions. Their perception is comparable across cultures; their expression is not, because of display rules.

1.2Emotion versus mood, and arousal

Emotion
Short-lived, with a clear target.
Mood
Long-lasting, with no target.
Arousal
The state of being activated, such as a raised heart rate or sweating.

Questions that explain themselves

Every answer comes with the why, and the lecture it came from.

Know if you are ready before the exam does

A readiness score per topic, built from every answer you gave.

Keeps you honest

One graded answer a day keeps the streak. Reading alone does not count.

The real thing, before the real thing

Same length, same clock, graded on the faculty's cesuur.

Updated when the course changes

A professor swaps two lectures; the summary follows the same week.

Your time is the most valuable thing you have.

Our job is to give it back. hyper-retention is how passOS learns you while you learn the course, so every hour you put in counts twice. Three things nobody else has:

Summaries that know what you remember

Adaptive summaries that understand what you remember and what you don't, and highlight accordingly.

Sampling and estimation3 / 9
The sampling distribution and the standard error

The sampling distribution describes what happens when you take many samples from the same population and compute the mean of each one. Its spread is the standard error: the standard deviation divided by the square root of the sample size.

ON THE EXAMTwo of the last three papers asked for the standard error with a given n.

Practice that changes with what you know

Questions drawn from where you have the most to gain, explained the moment you answer.

The Central Limit Theorem says the sampling distribution of the mean is approximately normal…
AFor any population, once the sample is large enough
BOnly if the population itself is normal
COnly if sampling is done without replacement
Not quiteThe theorem is about the sample size, not the population's shape. FROM LECTURE 3

Built-in spaced repetition: what you almost forgot comes back exactly when it should, and the score says where you stand.

What you still remember on exam day

Rereading fades within days. Three short retrievals across two weeks hold near ninety percent, every time. That is the whole trick, and passOS schedules it for you.

I got tired of big tutoring companies treating students like shit. Our mission is to fix education by young people, for young people.

Is your program not here yet?

Tell us which one and we will tell you the day it opens. It also decides what we build next, so this is worth thirty seconds.

Would you help open it?

Optional, and it is the fastest way to move your program up the queue. A room opens when somebody from it can teach it.

We use this to tell you when your program opens, and for nothing else.

The questions everybody asks

Five days really?
That is the point of the summaries: they are built from the course checklist and past exams, not from the whole book. You still have to do the work. It is just that most of the six weeks was spent deciding what to study, and we have already done that part.
Do I need the membership and the accelerator?
No. The membership works on its own all year, and an accelerator seat can be bought on its own. Being a member makes the seat cheaper.
Who writes this?
Students in your own program with proven grades, checked line by line before anything is published. If you find a mistake you report it inside the platform and we fix it, usually the same week.
How do I cancel?
One click in your account. No email, no waiting, no retention call.
My program is not listed
Then we are not in it yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. Put it on the list above: that list is genuinely what decides which cohort we open next.

Meet the founders

We believe education should be reinvented by young people, for young people. Nobody is gonna do it for us, so here we are.

During your university years you should have as much time as possible for the things that actually matter, instead of losing it to inefficient studying. The biggest regret first years report is that they did not know how to study, and that they burned an enormous amount of time finding out.

pass the year is made by erudeon, a small company in Rotterdam started by two students who met over a shared summary.
